Nestled in the heart of Milwich in Staffordshire, just a couple of minutes walk from Squirrel Barn, The Company of Horsemen, owned by Spencer Ratcliffe, offers more than just riding lessons – it’s a gateway to equestrian adventures for children and adults alike.
This is the stables where my own daughters have learned to ride, and I can confidently say that anyone with a love for horses and a sprinkle of adventure in their soul will have a good time.
Facilities
At The Company of Horsemen, they have both outdoor and indoor riding facilities so whatever the weather they continue to teach and train. The large outdoor arena is excellent for jumping a course of fences or completing a dressage test.
When you’re not riding, there is a comfortable waiting area where you can report to reception for your lessons, leading off from this is their newly built viewing gallery, ideal for parents/ spectators watching the lessons going on in the indoor school, and there is a range of warm drinks and refreshments available.
For The Budding Equestrians
My daughters were complete beginners when they began, and were welcomed with open arms and gentle patience. The instructors assessed their skill levels and matched their with the perfect ponies. The emphasis on safety and fun put my mind at ease, and by the end of the session, my daughters were beaming with pride and begging for more.
You can book lessons as a one off during your stay in Stafford, or if you’re local you can set up a course of lessons.
While my daughter was a beginner, I was pleasantly surprised to see experienced riders enjoying advanced lessons in the outdoor arena. The instructors cater to all levels, offering dressage, show jumping, and even stunt riding for the truly adventurous.
Parties and Playdates
The Company of Horsemen isn’t just about individual lessons. They offer fantastic themed birthday parties, where children can groom the horses, learn basic riding skills, and even enjoy pony themed games. The team will take care of all aspects of your party including food, and their party room comes complete with music and disco lights.
On Saturdays, they regularly host hour long pony sessions, covering how to care for and ride a pony, groom, muck out, fitting of the saddle and bridle and much more followed by a riding lesson on the ponies. These are perfect for those new to riding as it gives them a little taster of everything before perhaps choosing to move on to private or more advanced group riding lessons.
During school holidays, they hold Pony Day activity sessions, where children get to experience life at the stables. These are very popular and book up fast, so make sure you go to their website and book your child’s place fast!
